Community Building Through Self-Transformation

HiveQuest

HiveQuest is a platform for wellness and self-betterment. It is a community of learners who complete group challenges and share their transformations online. I worked with two other designers to improve HiveQuests's site navigation and to add a social element to the site that would serve to foster greater connection within the HiveQuest community.

Getting Started

HiveQuest's  site navigation and flow were confusing and needed improvement. We set out to design a more engaging and intuitive space for users to interact with one another both during and after completing challenges.

​

To understand our users, we joined challenges and explored the site. We then created survey questions, connected with members of the community, did phone interviews,  and synthesized our findings to eliminate user pain points.

​

We found that users would drop out of challenges because the site was difficult to navigate and had dead end or looping calls to action.  We reworked user flows and added breadcrumbs and established clear calls to action with appropriate copy. We eliminated excess tabs and organized challenges by date to help users throughout the experience.

In addition, we found that members of the community wanted to be more connected and really valued visual contributions so we and added a feature for email and created a social element in the form of a community bulletin where users could share images, insights, or reflections based on previous challenges.

I created a site map and user flow, which we used to ideate wireframes:

We iterated on these and created two separate parts of the site: My Community and My Challenges. The challenges section would serve as a place to accept, complete, archive and share challenges. The Community section would serve as a separate place where HiveQuest members could reflect, connect, and maintain relationships after challenges were completed.

The Design: My Challenges

The final design for the 'My Challenges' page includes:

 

  • A tab separating the user's individual posts within their 'journal' and posts from the community

  • A notification alert when a user receives comments or likes

  • Headshots of who has joined a challenge with a function to see a specific user's posts

  • Breadcrumbs to guide a user between different challenges

  • A challenge overview button that shows or hides information, creating a cleaner aesthetic

  • A hover drawer for quotes or reflections over images

  • A CTA button for users to share their insights

Completing a challenge in three steps:

The Design: Community Hive

Research, surveys, and phone interviews showed us that HiveQuest users placed high value on the visual element of challenges (posting images) over reflection (adding text) at a ratio of 60/40. For this reason, I focused on making the community space very image friendly, organized, and clean. The Community Hive is a place where users can:

  • Post images easily

  • Search for a community member, topic or challenge

  • See who has joined a group

  • Comment or like
